This Storytime STEM-Pack includes all the materials you need to engage children in a mathematics activity that addresses the concept of operations and algebraic thinking, in particular working with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. By introducing the children to the theme of urban gardening, it also links to life science concepts and human impact on Earth's systems. The activity is launched by showing the children customized quick image cards and then followed by reading the popular children’s book City Green. Next, children gain an understanding of rows and columns in an array, before each child builds their own array with the materials provided. The activity concludes with children planting beans, determining the best array for 24 peat pellets to fit on the provided tray. A Growing Beans Concept card is provided to guide observations and discussions. Included in this set, you'll find:
- Detailed instructions (i.e., lesson plan) for the learning activities
- Three 8 1/2 x11 quick image cards (bananas, pumpkins, melons)
- kidney beans
- graph paper
- 24 peat pallets
- One aluminum tray
- Growing Beans Concept Card
- A copy of City Green by DyAnne DiSalvo-Ryan
The entire activity takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. This STEM-Pack is suitable for grade 2.
